Reference
I’ve included this reference image of a dragonfly so that you can study it and take note of the special details.
This will help you as you draw the dragonfly and you may even use this to improve on your drawing later on.
We’ll begin by drawing the head of the dragonfly, then the body, and finally the wings.
Let’s begin with the first step.
Steps For Drawing A Dragonfly
Step 1
Draw a small half circle like this for the top of the head.
Step 2
Then draw two lines from the circle to create the body of the dragonfly. Draw another narrow line for the end of the body and it should look like this.
Step 3
On the left side of the dragonfly’s body, draw the first wing. It should be a good distance from the body itself.
Step 4
Just below the first wing, draw a second wing that joins to first and the top of dragonfly’s body.
Step 5
Now head over to the other side of the dragonfly’s body and draw the other wing.
Step 6
To finish of this dragonfly drawing, draw the final wing above then one you just drew and your drawing should be done.
If you want, you can go ahead and add a few more details like the pattern on the dragonfly’s body as shown in the reference.
Conclusion
So, what did you make of this tutorial on how to draw a dragonfly? Was it as simple as I promised? I sure do hope so.
I’ve never drawn a dragonfly before or even thought about drawing one but I’m definitely happy with my decision to do so.
It was an interesting subject to draw but the only regret I have is not adding a few more details as shown in the reference.
If you add a few more lines to indicate the pattern in the dragonfly, I have a feeling it might make this drawing better.
Otherwise, I think this dragonfly drawing is an overall success.
